Catbus Cake!

I thought I'd do something a bit different and make a cake! I've never made a cake before so I thought I'd use my own birthday as an excuse to make one.

Catbus Side

The cake is three basic white cakes baked in a standard bread loaf pan; the body is two stacked on top of each other, and the third makes up the head and tail. The frosting is buttercream, and the eyes, nose, mouth, ear and mice are fondant!

Cupcake Update: Bier Tasse Kuchen!

Today I made cupcakes for a potluck held by my uni's German club!

Beers I

The cake is basic white, the frosting is buttercream and the beer mugs are fondant! Simple but cool. They all were eaten and some people asked if I was a pro baker! Oh you guys. You're going to give me a big head!

Cupcake Update: My Neighbor Totoro!

Yesterday I made Totoro cupcakes for a vegan potluck!

Totoro from above

All of the cakes were chocolate. The grass is my favorite fluffy faux buttercream, and the soot gremlins have chocolate icing! The totoros, mushrooms and eyes are all fondant. I used a multi-opening grass tip for both the grass and the fuzzy soot gremlins. It took me about 5 hours from start to finish. This was my first time working with fondant!

Cupcake Update: Halloween!

Happy (late) Halloween everyone! Here are the cupcakes I made for yesterday's celebrations.

Pumpkin Rum Brains w/ Buttercream

Pumpkin Rum brains using an edited version of Martha Stewart's recipe, and buttercream frosting from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World (my absolute favorite frosting ever!).

Mint Chocolate Fuzzy Monsters

These are fuzzy green monsters using the basic chocolate cake recipe from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World and mint buttercream frosting. The eyes are tiny chocolate chips!

Coconut Ghosts w/ Buttercream

These are little coconut ghosts using Martha Stewart's coconut cake recipe, buttercream frosting, and chocolate chips eyes/mouths. The cake recipe is very dense and didn't rise much, but the flavor was really great. These turned out to be my favorites!
